The floating islands of Uros on Lake Puno was one of the highlights of our trip! It was so crazy to see all these people living on a small island! There were about 30 people on the island, the youngest being about 8 months old. They are able to go to the mainland to get food but they eat the reed that the islands are made out of. They cut the roots and tie them together, then lay the reeds on really thick until it forms the island. They use the reeds to make boats, houses, etc... Basically everything! Pretty amazing!
Our nice hotel room we got for a great deal!
Gotta love our charging station...
Amazing sunrise! We had to leave early to get a decent start before the waves started.
No that's not the boat we took haha
It was a 2 hour boat ride out to the islands so we were able to kick back some
First view of the Uros floating island
They were so cute welcoming us on the island!
We got a little information first before we were allowed to walk around. The edges are very soggy and you can sink right into the water. It was pretty neat listening to them explain the island.
This is a demo of how they make the island. The big black blocks are the roots they tie together.
SO.IN.LOVE with this picture!
They say be nice to your neighbors or they will cut you off (literally)
We got to go on a boat ride in a boat made from reeds
A French group came and installed solar panels so they could have electricity. Pretty neat!
The reeds are so tight together it almost looks like wood!
Inside one of the huts the families stay in.
I bought a pillow case from this lady :)
Landon got a reed boat!
Love the little bonnet :)
Open blue skies...ahhhh
This is the second island we went to see. It was a bit of a steep hike but really nice views!
Landon was really laughing over these "door hinges"
Local island man - the colorful hat means you are married and a white one means you are single (I guess in case the whole world wants to know... haha)
Hunchback? Ouch!
Dad trying to push down the bushes so we could get a picture of the sign haha
Back at the port in Puno, talk about green yucky water... yuck!
